Peter Van den Bergh is Full Professor (emeritus) at the University of Louvain, Brussels, Belgium. Fascinated by neuromuscular diseases, he obtained grants from the ALS Foundation USA to do research on ALS and muscle pathology at USC in Los Angeles and at Tufts New England Medical Center in Boston. He is certified by the American Board of Electrodiagnostic Medicine (ABEM).
He successfully defended his doctoral thesis in Neurosciences at the University of Louvain, Brussels, Belgium in 1992 : Effect of the raphe-spinal thyrotropin-releasing hormone system on the regulation of lower motor neuron function in the rat spinal cord.
He founded the Neuromuscular Reference Center at the University Hospital Saint-Luc in 1999 and received the Center of Excellence label from the GBS/CIDP Foundation International. He is an executive board member of the European Reference Network Euro-NMD and is co-chair of the Euro-NMD neurophysiology group.
His main areas of research are inflammatory neuropathies, electrodiagnosis and functional assessment scales in neuromuscular patients. He is the author or co-author of more than 211 peer-reviewed publications in peer-reviewed journals (H-index 51). He is past-chair the Inflammatory Neuropathy Consortium (INC) of the Peripheral Nerve Society (PNS) and he holds or has held leadership positions in the Belgian Neurological Society, the Belgian-Dutch Neuromuscular Study Group, the World Muscle Society (WMS), the European Academy of Neurology (EAN). He is a fellow of the European Academy of Neurology (FEAN) and of the Amercan Academy of Neurology (FAAN).
