…TIMESLOT: Thursday 16 April 2026, 16:00 CEST

…MAIN TITLE: Findings from nerve biopsies in everyday clinical practice, with a focus on inflammatory/immune-mediated neuropathies and the use of electron microscopy

…PRESENTERS: Prof. Joachim Weis (Institute of Neuropathology at RWTH Aachen University Hospital, Aachen, Germany)

Prof. Joachim Weis, MD is Director of the Institute of Neuropathology at RWTH Aachen University Hospital, Aachen, Germany, and an internationally recognized expert in neuromuscular and neurodegenerative diseases. His work focuses on understanding the molecular and cellular mechanisms underlying these disorders, with the goal of improving diagnosis and identifying new therapeutic targets.

His research particularly investigates the role of endoplasmic reticulum pathology, autophagy, and related cellular processes in neurodegeneration, as well as protective and regenerative mechanisms in nervous and muscular tissue.

Prof. Weis adopts a translational research approach, combining experimental studies using cell cultures and animal models with detailed clinicopathological analyses of human biopsy and autopsy specimens. This integrative methodology allows for a comprehensive understanding of disease mechanisms and their clinical manifestations.

He also collaborates closely with clinical and genetic partners to study genotype–phenotype correlations in neuromuscular disorders. Through his leadership at RWTH Aachen University Hospital, he contributes significantly to research, diagnostics, and academic training in neuropathology.
