Professor Francesco Muntoni is a world-leading Paediatric Neurologist specialising in the clinical, pathological, and molecular aspects of neuromuscular disorders. He is Director of the Dubowitz Neuromuscular Centre at UCL Great Ormond Street Institute of Child Health, where over 1,600 children are assessed annually.
His research focuses on the genetic basis and translational treatment of neuromuscular diseases, particularly Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD) and spinal muscular atrophy (SMA). He has contributed to the identification of over 30 disease genes and led the first clinical trials of morpholino antisense oligonucleotides as a genetic therapy for DMD.
Professor Muntoni has authored more than 400 peer-reviewed publications and secured major research funding from the MRC, Wellcome Trust, the European Commission, and various national and international charities. He also serves as Co-Director of the MRC Centre for Neuromuscular Diseases and Program Director for Developmental Neurosciences at ICH.
