I completed my medical training at the University of Catania (Italy), where I finished my neurology training in 1993. After completing my PhD research in neurobiology at the University of Amsterdam (UvA), I went to the United States for postdoctoral research. In 1996, I moved to the Netherlands and have been working at the Department of Neuropathology at the AMC (UvA) since 1998. Here, I completed my training in neuropathology, and I am currently working as a neuropathologist. Since 2013, I have been a Professor of Neuropathology at the UvA.
I am involved in various research lines with a particular interest in the neuropathology and molecular mechanisms of neurological diseases. In recent decades, there has been enormous progress in neuroscientific research on neuromuscular disorders. The increased knowledge of the disease process requires a multidisciplinary approach. This integrated multidisciplinary approach firmly places neuropathology in the clinical context alongside various clinical disciplines, as well as more fundamental neurosciences. Neuropathology serves as a connecting factor between clinical and basic research. As a neuropathologist, my task is to optimize collaboration between university medical centers in the field of neuropathology of neuromuscular diseases (Dutch Neuromuscular Tissue Bank/Muscle Disease Center Netherlands).
