prof. dr. Eleonora Aronica
- Neuropathologist
I completed my medical training at the University of Catania (Italy), where I graduated as a neurologist in 1993. After completing my PhD research in neurobiology at the University of Amsterdam (UvA), I pursued postdoctoral research in the United States. In 1996, I moved to the Netherlands and have been working at the Department of Neuropathology of the AMC (UvA) since 1998. Here, I completed my neuropathology training, currently work as a neuropathologist, and have been a Professor of Neuropathology at the UvA since 2013.
I am involved in various research lines with a special interest in neuropathology and the molecular mechanisms of neurological diseases. In recent decades, significant progress has been made in neuroscientific research on neuromuscular disorders. The increased understanding of the disease process requires a multidisciplinary approach. This integrated multidisciplinary approach firmly situates neuropathology in the clinical context alongside various clinical disciplines, as well as the more fundamental neurosciences. Neuropathology serves as a connecting factor between clinical practice and basic research. As a neuropathologist, it is my task to optimize collaboration between academic medical centers in the field of neuropathology of neuromuscular diseases (Dutch neuromuscular tissue bank/Muscle Disease Center Netherlands).
