KAROLINSKA UNIVERSITY HOSPITAL

Karolinska Universitetssjukhuset

Karolinska University Hospital (Stockholm, Sweden), known in Swedish as Karolinska Universitetssjukhuset, is one of the largest and most prestigious academic medical centers in Europe. It operates within the Swedish public healthcare system and is closely affiliated with the Karolinska Institutet, one of the world’s leading medical universities.

Located in Stockholm, the hospital provides highly specialized care across a wide range of disciplines, including neurology, oncology, cardiology, transplantation, and rare diseases. It is recognized for treating complex and high-acuity cases, supported by cutting-edge technologies and multidisciplinary teams.

Karolinska University Hospital plays a central role in medical education and clinical research, hosting numerous international research projects and clinical trials. It is particularly known for its contributions to translational medicine and innovation, helping bridge the gap between scientific discovery and patient care.

The hospital operates across two main sites, Solna and Huddinge. The Solna campus, often referred to as the New Karolinska Solna, is a state-of-the-art facility dedicated to highly specialized and advanced care, with strong integration between clinical practice, research, and education.

As a leading university hospital, Karolinska is committed to delivering high-quality, patient-centered care while advancing global standards in healthcare and biomedical research.

Since 2023, the pediatric neurology clinic at Karolinska and the children’s neurology clinic in Gothenburg have been responsible for national highly specialized care regarding neuromuscular diseases.

In the case of an established neuromuscular disorder, regular follow-ups are carried out by our muscle team. Children with diseases such as spinal muscular atrophy, Duchenne’s and Becker’s muscular dystrophy, other forms of primary non-inflammatory muscle diseases, neuromuscular transmission disorders, metabolic muscle diseases, and polyneuropathies are observed in our unit.

The muscle team takes care of children with neuromuscular diseases. Our team consists of child neurologists, nurses, dieticians, occupational therapists, and physiotherapists.

We also have close contact with orthopedists, orthopedic engineers, dentists, cardiologists, pulmonologists, and counselors, among others. Important collaboration partners outside the hospital are the habilitation, preschool and school, and staff/assistants.

Our goal is to ensure that our patients receive the best possible care and to prevent and counteract future complications. The team contributes with competence and experience for the child, the parents, staff in child rehabilitation, assistants, school staff, and other people involved in the child’s life in one way or another.
