EMBO Workshop: Skeletal Muscle Development, Metabolism, and Repair during Homeostasis and Disease

12 – 17 October 2024

Skeletal muscle plays a crucial role in human health at every stage of the life, from embryonic development to postnatal maturation, throughout adult life, and during the aging process.

This EMBO Workshop will present and discuss the latest, cutting-edge, unpublished data on topics at the forefront of skeletal muscle biology research, including skeletal muscle development, homeostasis, metabolism, regeneration, and diseases. The following scientific sessions are planned:

  • Myofiber formation and homeostasis in development, physiology and diseases
  • New technical advances and models
  • Muscle cell organelles in development, physiology and diseases
  • Cellular landscape in muscle during development, homeostasis, regeneration, and diseases
  • Stem cells in development, homeostasis, regeneration, and diseases
  • Inter-organ signaling in development, physiology, and diseases
  • Stem cell therapies
  • Post-transcriptional regulation in development, physiology and diseases
  • Mechanisms of muscle fiber atrophy in aging and diseases
  • Mechanisms and new treatments for muscle diseases

Presentations will include perspectives exploring these topics using different model systems, from invertebrates to human. Additionally, this workshop will feature techniques at the forefront of skeletal muscle research including use of advanced genetics, omics, and imaging approaches in addition to novel human muscle organoids.

Leaders and experts from across all areas of skeletal muscle research will assemble to present new data and stimulate discussions and collaborations. Many additional speakers will be invited from submitted abstracts, with special attention given to early career researchers and to ensure gender and geographical balance.

Interactive poster sessions and social events will foster interactions between established scientists and junior scientists/trainees to advance this important area of science.

This EMBO Workshop takes place in beautiful Catania, Italy at the height of autumn, close to Mount Etna, near the historical districts, and on the gorgeous Italian beaches.
