Dr. Rivas has a broad background in neuropathology, with specific training and expertise in neuromuscular pathology. He leads the Neuropathology Unit of the Department of Pathology at Hospital Universitario Vírgen del Rocío in Sevilla (Spain) since 2006, which is a reference center for diagnosis of neuromuscular pathology in the South of Spain (Andalusian region), where we study over 250 muscle biopsies per year.

In 2013 he obtained a grant to do a training stage in neuromuscular pathology for one year, in the Dubowitz Neuromuscular Center in Great Ormond Street Hospital (London, UK) with Prof. Francesco Muntoni and Prof. Carolyn Sewry.

Although routine activity is mainly focused in neuromuscular pathology, neurosurgical pathology and post-mortem study of brains from patients with neurodegenerative diseases are also an important area of activity. Dr. Rivas has a special interest in the field of muscle pathology, and therefore collaborates with other researchers and different groups from IBiS Research Center. A close and fruitful collaboration with Dr. Carmen Paradas’s group, have produced important peer-reviewed publications in this field.
