Pierre Carlier

Dr Pierre Carlier is a Research Director the French Atomic Energy Commission.

Dr Carlier received his MD and PhD from the State University of Liege, Belgium. He completed a research fellowship at the Belgian National Fund for Scientific Research. He was then an NIH Fogarty Fellow at the Cleveland Clinic Foundation and a research associate at Case Western Reserve University, Cleveland. In 1989, he was given the responsibility to initiate the NMR clinical diagnostic and research activities at the Liege University Hospital. He was hired by CEA in 1993 and served as the head of the NMR laboratory at the Institute of Myology in 2001-2019.

Dr Carlier’s work specializes in NMR imaging and spectroscopy of muscle, with a particular interest in the use of these techniques as quantitative outcome measures. Pierre Carlier has contributed to establish standard operating procedures and is engaged in numerous research projects further developing NMR as a non-invasive diagnostic tool and outcome measure. He is involved in teaching in France, Brazil, Iran, Baltic States, Belarus and Russia. Within the European Reference Network (ERN), he is responsible for the imaging activities of Euro-NMD.
