Prof Vilchez obtained his degree at the University of Granada (Spain), carried out a training in Neurology at La Fe University Hospital of Valencia in 1978, and completed one-year subspecialty training in Neuropathology at 12 October Hospital in Madrid. He spent a staying at The Royal Free Hospital in London as a visitor researcher under Professor PK Thomas direction, performing studies on experimental diabetic neuropathy and hereditary neuropathies. He obtained his PhD title at Valencia University in 1984 with a Doctoral Thesis on Muscular Dystrophies. He became appointed as Neurologist with spetial interest in neuromuscular disorders and spinal-cerebellar ataxias at La Fe University Hospital in Valencia since 1992, becoming nominated Head of the Neurological Department. He was appointed as Associated Professor of Neurology at Valencia University in 1984 and full Professor since 1999. Currently Prof Vilchez is leading a multidisciplinary clinical and research group at La Fe University Hospital in Valencia that has being nominated as a Spanish National Reference Centre (CSUR) and has joined to the Spanish Research Netware Center for Rare Diseases (CIBERNED). Prof Vilchez and his group have contributed to the discovery of new genes, description of new phenotypes and to relevant clinical-pathologic contributions in genetic neuropathies, muscular dystrophies, congenital myasthenia and spinal-cerebellar ataxia.
